When Highland Park High School freshman Ilya Mondrowski realized he and his skating partner, Bolingbrook resident Kiana Pan, took first place Jan. 20 at the United States Figure Skating Association’s National Championship, he couldn’t believe it.

“I actually didn’t accept it at all,” Mondrowski said. “I was just looking at every group after us, and realizing we were closer and closer and closer to first place, and I had no expectation for being first.”

Pan felt similarly.
