Like many other people, I watched a live stream of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris burning on April 15. I stared at my tiny phone screen in horror, watching flames lick the walls and roof of the cathedral, which was built in the 1100s, as the fire seemingly grew and grew.

After watching the stream for about twenty minutes, I decided to walk a mile down the street from my rented apartment and go see the cathedral in real life.
