During World War II, Highland Park resident Nathan Firestone became a prisoner of war, bravely telling the Nazis that captured him that he was Jewish.

In 2019, Firestone, celebrating his 100th birthday, faced a different sort of challenge at a celebration held at Congressman Brad Schneider’s Lincolnshire Office Feb. 22 — which to eat first, a bagel or a slice of birthday cake?
