The Highland Park Police Department has increased security at city synagogues and other houses of worship, in the wake of a shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue that left 11 dead and six wounded, according to mayor Nancy Rotering.

Rotering condemned the act of violence at Monday night’s city council meeting and said the community was left with “broken hearts” in the aftermath of Saturday’s massacre, which will be prosecuted as a hate crime.
