Shannon Ruiz-Crosswhite considered every step she took in the summer of 2018 a victory.

Each small step in her recovery presented its own challenge but also a sign of progress.  

Earlier that year, the first-grade teacher at Highland Park’s Wayne Thomas Elementary was diagnosed with an ascending aortic aneurysm and a bicuspid aortic valve.
