When Highland Park native and Los Angeles police commissioner Steve Soboroff got his first typewriter “about 20 years ago” at an auction, a typewriter from a famous sports writer, he wasn’t expecting much to come of it.

He got interested in acquiring collectibles after selling a baseball glove formerly owned by Sandy Koufax, and seeing how much money that brought in. Knowing he had five children he had to send through college, Soboroff decided to purchase the famous typewriter.
